The 1/97 Story

A year-by-year timeline tracing our path from young MER recruits to the operational backbone of the fleet, and finally to seasoned veterans.

The Beginning

Joining as MER

The 1/97 batch began its journey by joining the Indian Navy as MER. We reported for duty and commenced our rigorous 6 months basic training at INS Chilka in Odisha. During this intense phase, we underwent demanding physical, academic, and military training designed to transform us from civilians into disciplined sailors ready for service.

Professional Training

Specialisation Schools

Following basic training at INS Chilka, batchmates were allocated critical technical and operational trades. We moved to specialized training establishments like INS Valsura (Electrical), INS Shivaji (Engineering), INS Dronacharya (Gunnery), INS Hamla (Logistics) and other Schools. Here, we mastered the complex weapons, sensors, communications, and machinery systems that keep naval warships fully operational and combat-ready.

1998 - 2012

Service at Sea

The Operational Backbone

Over the years, we were deployed on frontline destroyers, frigates, submarines, and aircraft carriers across the Eastern, Western, and Southern Naval Commands. As the highly-skilled technical and operational backbone of the fleet, our batch was responsible for operating advanced radars, maintaining heavy engineering plants, handling weapons, and ensuring flawless communications during exercises and critical maritime operations.

Veterans & Second Careers

Transition and Brotherhood

After completing our initial 15-year engagements, many batchmates successfully transitioned into civilian and corporate sectors as proud veterans, leveraging the technical expertise and leadership acquired in uniform. Others continued their service, rising to senior ranks like Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO). Decades after we first reported to INS Chilka, the 1/97 batch remains bound by shared memories and an enduring brotherhood.
